Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Pipeline Inspection
What Is It
Find Pipeline Metal Loss Before It Becomes a Leak
Corrosion can develop along a pipeline in places that are difficult to see or reach. Checking a few accessible points may leave significant sections unexamined, particularly on long or buried lines.
IRC Engineering’s Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) inspection screens steel pipelines for indications of metal loss. An in-line tool travels through a suitable pipeline, while an external scanner can be used on accessible sections. Both use a magnetic field to detect changes associated with corrosion and other wall loss, helping teams decide where closer inspection is needed.
Our MFL inspections screen for:
- Internal corrosion
- External corrosion
- Localised pitting
- General metal loss
- Mechanical damage
Why MFL
Why Choose Magnetic Flux Leakage Inspection?
MFL provides a practical way to screen pipeline sections and locate indications that need detailed assessment.
Wider Coverage
In-line MFL tools can inspect long runs of suitable pipelines, providing more continuous coverage than isolated spot checks.
Targeted Follow-Up
Location-tagged indications help inspection teams focus verification and repair work where it is needed.
