Charpy Impact Testing Services
What Is It
Charpy Impact Testing
A material can pass every tensile test and still shatter when it gets cold enough.
IRC Engineering’s Charpy impact testing measures how materials behave under sudden, high-energy loading - including temperatures down to -200°C.
Our testing supports:
- Pressure vessels & piping
- Weld procedure qualification
- Low-temperature & cryogenic applications
- Failure analysis
Why Charpy
Why Choose Charpy Testing?
Charpy testing answers a critical question: will this material absorb sudden impact without brittle failure?
Toughness
Measures the energy a material absorbs before fracture.
Low Temperature
Evaluates material performance under extreme cold.
Brittle Failure
Identifies materials vulnerable to sudden fracture.
Transition Point
Helps establish the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature.
How It Works
How the Test Works
A notched specimen is struck by a swinging pendulum in a controlled single blow. The energy absorbed during fracture is measured to determine impact toughness.
Specimen Preparation
A standard notched test specimen is prepared.
Temperature Conditioning
The specimen is conditioned at the required test temperature.
Impact Test
A pendulum strikes the specimen in a controlled blow.
Energy Measurement
The absorbed impact energy is measured.
Result Analysis
Results are evaluated to determine material toughness and brittle fracture behaviour.
